Carlos Cuauhtemoc
Carlos Cuauhtemoc paints luminous animal forms that rise from flat fields of color and are charged with deliberate, controlled drips. Built in layers of oil and acrylic on linen, often at large scale, the paintings operate as image and event at once: a figure held at the instant between gesture and apparition.
In his Horses and Bulls series, the animal is not the subject but what it carries. Grounded in biblical imagery, the horse and the bull become allegorical bodies: power without domination, freedom that cannot be subdued. His animals cast no shadow. They radiate. Prophetic Sessions takes this further, treating the canvas as a place of worship and communion rather than illustration.
Cuauhtemoc began his studies in Monterrey in drawing, oil painting and printmaking, and trained at the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) in Mexico City. He then worked alongside his father as a muralist in Mexico and Panama. That formation still governs his command of scale, composition and the weight of the gesture.
Beside the animal series runs a more intuitive line of abstract work. Twists and Turns follows the lineage of action painting, where the canvas becomes an event rather than a picture. New Horizons is painted without linear narrative, as a form of self-examination. Density Emotions and Geometry Expressions explore color and structure as carriers of feeling. Across all of them, the surface is built through impasto and sgraffito, brush and palette knife, dripping and successive layers of color.
Alongside his studio practice, Cuauhtemoc has worked for more than fifteen years in digital transformation and technology across the nonprofit, public and private sectors, including initiatives associated with the United Nations and the World Bank. He founded the Applied Data & Digital Innovation Lab, which brings together international volunteers in AI and data. That systems-oriented practice stands in deliberate contrast to the hand-made, physical nature of his paintings.
His paintings do not seek to explain the unseen, but to give it form.
